Born in 1945 at Loriol-sur-Drôme, Jean-Louis Boissier studied mathematics and physics, after which he became involved in graphic design, photography, experimental cinema and installation art. He participated as early as 1969 in the creation of the Arts Department at the University of Paris 8 (formerly Vincennes, now Saint-Denis).
In the 1970's and 80's he studied the history and aesthetics of modern and traditional Chinese arts, curating several exhibitions on the subject. In the early 1980's, as an artist, researcher and exhibition curator he was one of the pioneers of interactivity in art.
At the Laboratory for Interactive Aesthetics, which he founded in 1990 at the University of Paris 8, he developed a series of videodiscs on the subject of digital images, and directed a series of collective artistic research experiments on the creation of figures and instruments of interactivity, and on interactive gestures.
Jean-Louis Boissier is professor of aesthetics (University of Paris 8), and director of research (CIREN Laboratory, University of Paris 8; Atelier for Interactive Research, école Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, Paris).
