Ein Hauptthema des vielschichtigen und umfangreichen Werkes des amerikanischen Videokünstlers Gary Hill ist die Reflexion von Wahrnehmungsprozessen. Dabei verbindet sich die Auseinandersetzung mit der Beschaffenheit des Videobildes, dessen integraler Bestandteil für Hill der Ton ist, mit unterschiedlichen Ansätzen der diskursiven Analyse und Verwendung von Sprache als Bedeutungs- und Zeichensystem. Mit der formal äußerst präzisen Konzeption seiner Arbeiten im Bereich der Bild- und Tongestaltung sowie auch der räumlichen, skulpturalen, entwirft Hill Strukturen, die die einzelnen Bestandteile in einen komplexen Kreislauf der stetigen gegenseitigen [Neu-] Definition eintreten lassen: Immaterielle, flüchtige Systeme der stetigen Verschiebung, Verschmelzung und Ablösung von Konstituenten und Bedeutungen.
