Das Werk des südafrikanischen Künstlers William Kentridge verfolgt seit den 1970er Jahren eine Richtung, die das Persönliche und das Politische durch den innovativen Gebrauch von Kohlezeichnung, Animation, Film und Theater miteinander verknüpft. Sein Werk zeigt eine nuancierte Sicht auf die zeitgenössische, vom Erbe der Apartheid geprägte südafrikanische Gesellschaft - gebrochen durch die individuellen Erfahrung.
Kentridge konstruiert seine unverwechselbaren animierten Filme mittels einer besonderen Technik, in der jede animierte Sequenz aus einem Prozess des sukzessiven Veränderns, Ausradierens, übermalens entsteht - hin zu einer einzigen animierten Zeichnung, die am Ende desselben übrig bleibt.

Kentridge schloss 1976 sein Studium in Politikwissenschaften und Afrikanistik an der University of the Witwatersrand [ZA] ab. Von 1976-80 studierte er an der Johannesburg Art Foundation, wo er von 1978-80 Druckgraphik unterrichtete. Seit 1992 erarbeitet und realisiert Kentridge in Zusammenarbeit mit der Handspring Puppet Company multimediale Theaterprojekte.
