The ZKM Library with desks. In the background bookshelves

The shared library of the ZKM and the Karlsruhe University of Art and Design (HfG) houses a collection of around 60,000 books and digital storage media. Furthermore, the library subscribes to approximately 120 journals and five daily newspapers. The library also supervises several archives and estates, which are housed and owned by the ZKM and the HfG.

As museum and university library, it concentrates on contemporary art, above all, media art and theory, aesthetics, philosophy, film, photography, product and graphic design, scenography, architecture, curatorial theory and practice, performing arts, theater, electro-acoustic music, and literature. The collection also contains numerous artist monographs and exhibition catalogues.

The complete library inventory is open stack and systematically arranged to facilitate searching for literature directly on the shelf. Computer stations are available for viewing digital media data and online access to the databanks and to the Internet. The library collection can be researched online via the Library Catalogue (OPAC).
