Rome – the Eternal City in Transformation

The ZAK, University of Karlsruhe (TH) has meanwhile organized ten consecutive international scientific symposiums within the framework of the 19. Europäische Kulturtage Karlsruhe. The symposium will again take place in cooperation with the ZKM and Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe under the direction of Caroline Y. Robertson-von Trotha (ZAK), Achim Thorwald (Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe) and Peter Weibel (ZKM). With the help of a diverse selection of themes the aim of the symposium "Rome – the Eternal City in Transformation" is to highlight the dark as well as the light sides of the eternal city and its nation.

German and Italian representatives from fields of politics, science and culture will have opportunity to voice their views on contemporary Italian questions. Principle lectures, short talks and discussions will be supplemented by visual and culinary contributions.

Speakers and podium guests are, among others Khaled Fouad Allam (Professor for Islamic Studies and Sociology at the University of Triest, Journalist for "La Repubblica"), Eleonora Barbieri Masini (Professor for Future Studies and Human Ecology, Papal Gregorian University of Rome, member of the Club of Rome), Heinz-Jürgen Beste (scientific lecture at the Rome department of the, German Institute of Archaeology), Pierfrancesco Frerè (Journalist at the Italian news agency Ansa), Emilio Gentile (Professor for Modern History, Universiy La Sapienza, Rome), Udo Gümpel (correspondent at n-tv), Kay Nehm (Attorney General ret.), Leoluca Orlando (President of the Institutes Rinascimento Siciliano, former mayor of Palermo, Parliamentary and European Parliamentary Representative), Vieri Quilici (Professor for Urban Planning, University Roma Tre), Umberto Santino (Founder and Director of the Sicilian Center of Documentation Giuseppe Impastato, Palermo).
