ZKM, together with the SWR broadcasting network’s EXPERIMENTALSTUDIO, will award the eigth Giga Hertz Award for electronic and acousmatic music.
This year the Giga-Hertz Award for Electronic Music goes to musician, legendary producer (among others, of Talking Heads, U2, and Coldplay) and multi-media artist Brian Eno. In addition to the Lifetime Achievements Award presented to Brian Eno, the Award for Production will also be presented to Brazilian-born Giuliano Obici, to the Spaniard Lula Romero, and to the Danish duo Vinyl-Terror & -Horror.
The award winner of the »Motion Picture 2.0« competition will also be selected on the same evening: The ZKM, together with the Federal Ministry for Education and Research as part of the Science Year 2014 – The Digital Society, invited all interested to submit their experiments with the new recording technology »Motion Picture 2.0«.
Following the awards ceremony, French composer Pierre Henry will hold an exclusive concert with his work »Le fil de la vie« from 2012. The 87-year-old pioneer of electro-acoustic music will be presented with the Giga-Hertz Grand Prize for SoundArt-2013.
The ZKM and SWR EXPERIMENTALSTUDIO are to present awards to composers in the category »Electronic Music«. This year the Giga-Hertz Prize is endowed with € 25.000 prize money. The three internationally oriented Giga-Hertz Awards for Production, each endowed with € 5.000, serve to initiate and fund new projects, and are directed at composers working in the field of electronic and acousmatic music. Innovative projects in this field will also be awarded in 2014. Renowned artists are honored with the Giga-Hertz First Prize endowed with € 10.000 – this will not be publically listed, but determined on the basis of proposals put forward by members of the jury.
This year’s jury includes Ludger Brümmer (Director of the ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics), Björn Gottstein (musicologist and journalist,Artistic Director of Eclat- Festival), Detlef Heusinger (Artistic Director of the SWR EXPERIMENTALSTUDIO), Alain Thibault (composer, Artistic Director of Elektra Festival) and Peter Weibel (Chairman of the ZKM | Karlsruhe).
Main Award Winner 2014 | Brian Eno (England)
Brian Eno is an artist who reinvents himself time and again in his work. He is a musician, composer, audiovisual artist and music producer, and has worked with numerous artists including David Byrne, Talking Heads, David Bowie, U2, Coldplay and Robert Fripp.
A graduate of the Winchester School of Art (England), Eno has a keen sense of using electronic studio technology as a tool to 'paint sound'. Following this idea, he created Ambient, a new genre of music that is well received in many circles and based on the technical means of the studio – »Generative Music«.
Eno also developed three very successful Apple Apps: »Bloom, Trope and Scape« – generative music and art applications. In an interview on the subject, he said: »An artist produces a system that in turn produces a work – instead of the artist producing the work directly.«
Eno continues to be the artist behind numerous audiovisual installations and building projections. His use of electronic sound technology, his experimental aesthetics and his intensive collaboration with other artists have had a decisive impact on today's music. For him, artistic ambition and popular art have never been a contradiction that cannot be united. Brian Eno receives the Giga Hertz Main Prize for Electronic Music for his life's work.
