Biography
Johannes Gfeller studied art history, general linguistics, and philosophy, and is cofounder of Container-TV in Bern (1978, CH). From 1983–2001 he was a freelance professional photographer and media technician. 1987–2002 he taught technology and aesthetics of video art at the Institute of Design and Technology Bern and Biel (CH), 2001–2011 he was professor for preservation and restoration of electronic media at Bern University of the Arts, and 2002–2012 head of ActiveArchive. Gfeller is a member of the competence networks in film and video of the MEMORIAV association and since 2006 guest lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (AT). In 2008, he cocurated the exhibition »Reconstructing Swiss Video Art from the 1970s and 1980s« at the Museum of Art Lucerne (CH). Since 2009 he is a member of the Advisory Council of IMAP, and since 2011 professor and head of the MA course Conservation of New Media and Digital Information at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design (DE).
