Biography

From 1974 to 1979 Marcel Odenbach studied Architecture, Art History and Semiotics at the Technische Hochschule, Aachen. From 1992-97 he was Professor of Media Arts at the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung, Karlsruhe. He lives in Cologne.

Odenbach's work falls into three complementary categories: collage drawings, video tapes, and video installations. His collage drawings show architectural forms within which text or photographic fragments have been incorporated. His video tapes evoke a narrative structure through the combination of several different levels of images and sounds. His principal aim here is to comment on the cosily familiar world of the television screen by means of dividing images and effecting abrupt shifts between them. Odenbach's installations are relatively simple in their arrangement they usually contain two or three projected video tapes (which establish their own interrelationship), combined with a few very ordinary utensils or pieces of furniture. Odenbach is concerned to address the issues raised by German history. Since the early 1990s he has included social and political issues currently being debated, such as racism or discrimination against homosexuals.
