Biography
Rune Mields was born in Münster in 1935. Since 1970 she has worked as a freelance artist. She lives in Cologne.

A Conceptualist, Mields transforms into images the abstraction of mathematical operations. In every culture, counting and counting systems are a component of the prevailing image of the world, and they therefore determine the structures of the rational within those of the culture as a whole. They often also possess a magical significance. In her multi-part works and series of drawings and paintings, Mields seeks to explore and to visualize these counting systems and their varying significance. She combines the form-bestowing capacities of painting with concepts of mathematical arrangement. In the early 1970s Mields produced cylindrical pictures, their simple shapes linking perspective, dynamism and geometric symbolism. Prime numbers - numbers divisible only by themselves and by the number one - recur frequently in Mields's work. Mields uses series of images to address themes such as systems of notation, myths of creation, the Western ideal of beauty, theories of colour, and music.
