In the wake of the „material culture“ of the Constructivists and the „Poly-materialism“ of the Futurists, a conception of the image and painting had already developed in the 1920s, which refrained from using oil paints and canvas. Then, in the 1950s, the artistic dissolution and destruction of panel painting began in Italy. The panel started being separated from painting; a development, which had far reaching consequences fort he history of art. Artists not only rejected the portrayal of the representational world, but also the materials of painting, i.e. oil and canvas. The Italian avant-garde artists lacerated and perforated the canvas. They curved it in space, pressed, layered, or stretched it. There are no longer any pictures in these works, but only the canvas itself. The canvas too was ultimately replaced by plastic film, wood, metal, marble, or concrete. The Step was then taken from colour and the picture on towards material panels. These made new relationships possible between the „picture“ and the observer. Optical phenomenons occurred by using metal and other reflective materials, opening up the field of »Op art«. Liquids as colour, rotating iron filings, etc. eventually generated the moving, or rather moved, pictorial object of Kinetics. This publication (504 pages)clarifies one of the most important developments in the 20th century European art by means of two comprehensive and well-grounded texts (in German, Italian and English) by Peter Weibel (Ed.) and Klaus Wolbert and supplemented by an introduction by Volker W. Feierabend, as well as by means of 176 colour images. At the same time, the volume documents the exhibition »Rome – Open Painting. The Material Picture in Italy in the 1950s and 1960s«, which was produced by the ZKM | Karlsruhe in collaboration with the VAF Foundation in 2008 and could be viewed in the ZKM | Museum of Contemporary Art.
