Karinding – In tune with earth
You can see five people sitting on the ground in the forest. In front of them is a tray with cups and coconuts. The people have objects made of wood in their hands and mouths.

Mitembeyan is an Indonesian ritual that takes place before sowing, planting or harvesting agricultural products.

With the mitembeyan ceremony, nature, animals or spirits are asked for permission to use the place. Humans act as a guest in the ecosystem and must present themselves and their request before they are allowed to use the land.

The karinding, a traditional musical instrument made of bamboo, is an important part of this ritual. Not only does it serve as an accompaniment, but it is also believed that the sound waves produced by the karinding can promote plant growth. With the artist Vincent Rumahloine and his team member Reksi Muhamed Sidik from the community project »Sedekah Benih« in Bandung, Indonesia, we will learn to create a sound with the karinding and play it together, asking for permission to be part of the ZKM orchard.

Please bring sturdy shoes and weatherproof clothing.
The workshop is combined with an approx. 20-minute walk to the ZKM orchard.
