Biography

Born in Graz, Austria, Dorit Chrysler is a Berlin/NY based composer, sound artist, musicologist and theremin virtuoso. She is the recipient of the Austrian State Stipend in Composition 2023 and the founder of the NY Theremin Society. Since her first encounter with the theremin she has mastered and performed with it internationally in a myriad of contexts and with a variety of collaborators. Chrysler is a particpating artist in the Shanghai Biennale 2023. Her latest work has been commissioned by & produced on the site of the MoMA »Calder Plays Theremin« and shown in solo exhibitis at KW Berlin, Fridman Gallery NY and Schaumbad Graz. Further commissions include Steirischer Herbst, Knightsbridge Foundation and Klangfestival. She has performed with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra twice, at Lincoln Center and Vienna Konzerhaus. Her sonic works are part of collections at the Guggenheim, Brooklyn and Louisiana Museum. Chrysler’s compositions for film and theater include HBO »Going Clear« and »M – Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder« and the Nestroy Price theater play »3 Episodes of Life«. Chrysler has collaborated with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, CERN, Laurie Spiegel, Marie Losier, Herb Deutsch, Elliot Sharp, Trentemøller, Alva Noto, Pioneerworks and the Gaite Lyrique. She has produced a ten piece orchestra performance for the LA Walt Disney Concert Hall and is the founder of »Dame Electric«, a festival featuring female pioneers of electronic music.
