Garth Knox was born in Ireland and was brought up in Scotland. During his studies at the »Royal College of Music« in London, he won several prizes as a chamber musician and violaist and, after graduating, performed with leading London ensembles. Since 1998, Garth Knox has dedicated himself to a solo carrier; he lives in Paris and gives concerts in Europe, Japan and the USA. Knox is considered a pioneer of the Viola d’amore since, through its electro-acoustic extension he is in the process of creating a new repertoire for this instrument.

With this concert, the internationally renowned violaist Garth Knox brings to a conclusion his guest residency at the Hochschule für Musik (Academy of Music) Karlsruhe. The focal point of his creative work and thus, also his teaching activity is contemporary music. Hence, in this concert, Knox’s own works will be heard, but also those of Luciano Berio, George Benjamin, Morton Feldman, Patrick Marcland, Salvatore Sciarrino, Birke Bertelsmeier (UA), György Kurtág, Toru Takemitsu and Tristan Murail.
