Finding a common denominator to define what distinguishes the constellation Polwechsel as an innovator of music is not easy. “Hybrid forms of music emerge” as Christian Scheib wrote (2009), “which cannot really be interpreted as the discourse of the improviser, including the free one, nor with those of the composer, even with those of the open forms”. Evolving over the course of the last two decades, the ensemble’s music is based on processes of composition especially tailored to the abilities and playing techniques of the participating musicians, which have enabled the instrumentalists to develop their own voice. During this period, Polwechsel created compositions, structured improvisations and electronic music that have explored and analyzed the organization of sound, sound geometry and the dynamic of the ensemble. Sound, reverberation and spatial acoustics form the inspiration and the reflective field of Polwechsel’s present work. Burkhard Beins focuses on processes of collective work, which he controls by an interactive score and through which he achieves sophisticated levels of musical complexity. Michael Moser transforms the instruments into loudspeakers to which he applies sound-converter bodies, thus creating offset spatial depth. In Martin Brandlmayr’s piece, the instrumental improvisations are recorded and played back in spatial variations such that the musicians repeatedly respond anew to what they have themselves played and that which has just been produced. Werner Dafeldecker uses recordings of a blizzard he experienced in the Antarctic. Constant and extreme alternations between dynamic and density in the musical process throw light on the monolithic form of the original material.
