Tom Rainey has been one of the outstanding drummers of New York's downtown scene since the 1990s. Along with colleagues such as Tim Berne and Andy Laster, he is one of the most striking musicians of his generation.

Rainey has never stopped evolving his music with the representatives of his scene. In addition to this he has deliberately sought younger players, such as saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock or guitarist Mary Halvorson, to inspire his unique playing to totally new musical results.

In his band called Obbligato, the veterans Ralph Alessi on trumpet and bassist Drew Gress are joined by two young New Yorkers: Jacob Sacks on piano and Ingrid Laubrock on saxophone. Together they decompose well-known standards of jazz history into impressionistic sketches and negotiate timeless themes in exuberant melodic variations and smooth group play.
